How to choose the right electric actuator

the description of the electric actuator

There are many names for electric actuators in the market, which is easy to confuse. In fact, this is based on industry classification. In the valve industry classification, the electric actuator is called the valve electric device, which is referred to as the electric device, and the practitioners in the valve industry refer to it as electric equipment. In the instrumentation industry classification, it belongs to the type of actuator, so it is called electric actuator or electric actuator.

the definition of electric actuators

Baidu Encyclopedia defines it broadly as: a drive that provides linear or rotary motion, using some kind of drive energy and working under certain control signals. The actuator uses liquid, gas, electric or other energy sources and converts it into a drive through a motor, cylinder or other device.

This expression is more specific in the valve industry: the valve electric device is an indispensable driving device for valve program control, automatic control and remote control, and its movement process can be controlled by the stroke, torque or axial thrust. Since the operating characteristics and utilization of the valve electric device depend on the type of valve, the device operating specifications and the position of the valve on the pipeline or equipment.

Through the understanding of the above definition, we know that electric actuators are widely used in real life, such as: electric power, metallurgy, petroleum, chemical, paper, sewage treatment and other industries. By electrically driving the valve and its similar equipment, tasks that are beyond the reach of manpower can be accomplished, such as excessive torque requirements or harsh conditions in the valve.

How to choose the right electric actuator

how to choose the right electric actuator

So how can we choose a suitable electric device? From the perspective of our electric device sales, we can also say what parameters do we need to determine which electric actuators the customer needs? Explain in detail below:

Of course, the easiest thing is that the customer directly provides the model of the electric actuator, which is the easiest to determine, but there is a problem here. There are many models of electric actuators on the market, which also causes some trouble for the comparison between products.

If there is no electric actuator model, then take the following steps:

determine the type of electric device

Electric actuators are generally divided into four categories: multi-turn electric devices, partial rotary electric devices, straight-stroke electric actuators, and angular-stroke electric actuators. This is differentiated according to the way the electric actuators operate. Because the operation of a valve or similar device determines how the electric actuator operates.

For example, gate valves, globe valves, etc. need to be turned many times to realize the opening or closing of the valves, so they are multi-turn valves, and such valves require multi-turn electric devices.

For example, butterfly valves, ball valves, etc. only need to be rotated 90° to open or close the valve, so they are partial-rotation valves, which need to be equipped with partial rotary electric devices.

For example, single-seat valves, double-seat valves, sleeve valves, etc. are straight-stroke valves, that is, valves that normally reciprocate in a straight line (including movement in a spiral manner) require a linear actuator.

For example, a flapper door, a gate, etc., which have a fixed rotating shaft and need to be rotated from 0° to 90°, require a quarter-turn electric actuator.

Although the electric actuator has many operating modes, the linear actuator and the multi-turn electric device can be converted by technical means. Similarly, the angular electric actuator and the partial rotary electric device can also be converted by adding or subtracting the arm.

determine the force or torque (torque) to be output by the electric device

For multi-turn electric devices, partial rotary electric devices, and angular-stroke electric actuators, the most important parameter is torque, the unit is N.m. The opening or closing of the valve requires a torque to act on it. If the torque is small, it may result in failure to close and not open.
The most important parameter for a straight-stroke electric actuator is the force in N. If the force is small, the valve will not open or close.
Therefore, in the process of electric device selection, follow one of the simplest principles: Would rather choose a big one, and don’t choose a small one.

the functional selection of electric devices

You need to determine what features you want the electric device to implement, generally divided into three categories:

The first type: ordinary electric device This type of electric device has a simple dial to display the switch of the valve, and the external control requires the electric control box, which is the most basic model.

The second category; mechatronics electric devices. Such electric devices come with a control box, so-called electromechanical integration. With liquid crystal display, it can feedback 4~20mA standard signal, which can determine the full open, full off, and uncertain intermediate position of the valve, that is, the switch quantity control.

The third category: the adjustment type electric device, the difference from the electromechanical integration electric device is the difference of the control mode; the analog quantity control can receive and feedback the 4~20mA standard signal, so that the accurate adjustment of the valve can be realized, and the valve can be determined Fully open, fully closed and precise intermediate position.
is the choice of some additional features.

Generally divided into whether you need remote control (add non-invasive module), whether you need explosion protection, and so on.

Determination of electric device parameters

Such as the voltage used, the valve opening and closing time, and so on.

Through the above five steps, you can choose an electric actuator that is right for you.
